Telematics algorithm for PHEVs to help fleet managers cut fuel costs

Targa Telematics has enhanced its Targa Lite telematics solution with a new plug-in hybrid function to further help fleet managers optimise fuel consumption amid soaring prices.

Targa Lite has now been updated with a new algorithm for plug-in hybrid vehicles that analyses whether vehicles are being powered by the combustion engine or the electric motor

Launched two years ago, the solution helps operators to efficiently manage refuelling and to optimise fleet maintenance costs, while avoiding issues with driver privacy. According to Targa, implementing Targa Lite can reduce operating costs up to 20%.

It’s now been updated with a new algorithm for plug-in hybrid vehicles that analyses whether vehicles are being powered by the combustion engine or the electric motor. Analysis by Targa has found that 80% of PHEVs only use the electric mode 30% of the time. Ramping this up to 42% electric mode usage would see CO2 emissions and fuel costs decrease by 33% and 37%, respectively, compared to an equivalent diesel-powered vehicle, according to the firm.

The new feature enables fleets to see where action is needed to encourage electric mode use and recharging or, if need be, move PHEVs to drivers undertaking suitable trips for this type of vehicle.

Targa Lite can also help fleets cut fuel costs and maximise fleet utilisation through automating operations such as refuelling reconciliation, discrepancy identification and refuelling monitoring, average consumption and fuel card usage. It’s also able to provide reports on private mileage.

Other new features on Targa Lite can operators prevent costs arising from maintenance, tolls and insurance claims, further helping to cut bills.
