The carmaker has yet to confirm which sites will feature the charging points, but it’s possible that these could include Hopwood Park on the M42 and South Mimms on the M25.

Both sites have reserved parking bays for additional charging points and are strategically placed to connect owners to a network which now spans most of Europe.

Tesla already has 68 active Superchargers at 22 locations across the UK, offering a free charge to 80% battery capacity in around half an hour for drivers of the Model S, as well as for the forthcoming Model X SUV and Model 3 compact executive car. It’s claimed that these have saved 350,000 litres of fuel and 1,000 tonnes of CO2.
