The TMG EV P002 uses an uprated version of the drivetrain fitted to the Nurburgring Nordschleife record-holding Toyota from last year. Based on a Radical sports car chassis, it offers a top speed of over 135mph, a 350kW power output and 900Nm torque from its twin electric motor setup.

At Pikes Peak, Toyota Motorsport aims to prove it can maintain full power over a wide-ranging altitude, travelling from 2,800 metres above sea level at the start to 4,300 metres at the finish line.

Ludwig Zeller, general manager electric and electronics, said: ‘TMG wants to be increasingly involved in electric motorsport and we believe our powertrain technology is an industry-leading combination of performance, durability and packaging.

‘Electric powertrain technology in motorsport is still in its development phase but through projects like this one, TMG is laying the foundations for the future of high-performance and motorsport cars.’
