UK AFV registrations increase 25% in January

The SMMT data shows that AFV registrations grew 25% in January compared to the same month last year in an overall new car market up 7.6%. Of the total registrations, almost all were petrol-electric hybrids.

Commenting on the figures, Phil Harrold, automotive partner at PwC, said the rise reflects both motorists' desire for more economical motoring alongside their desire to go green but noted the rise is from a low base and such vehicles account for just 1.8% of registrations.

The figures follow last week’s unveiling of the government/industry “Go Ultra Low” campaign to promote the advantages of ultra-low emission vehicles, which will provide a further stimulus to this market sector, said the SMMT.

It added that the Plug-In Car Grant of up to £5,000 continues to provide an important incentive to buyers of pure electric and plug-in vehicles.
