Zapmap has published latest figures showing the UK’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure continues to grow and evolve.

Ubitricity has the largest number of charge points in the UK, followed by Pod Point and BP Pulse

Its newly published figures for August show there were 45,737 public electric vehicle charging points across the UK as of the end of July 2023, up 40% year on year and spread across 26,805 charging locations and with 72,778 connectors.

Last month, 1,999 new EV charging devices were added to the Zapmap database. The figures also don’t include charge points installed at home or at workplace locations, which are estimated to be more than 400,000.

The figures reveal that the past few years have seen a significant increase in the number of public EV charge points in the UK. Between the end of 2016 and 2022 the charge point network grew four-fold from 6,500 to more than 37,261 devices. In the last 12 months between end of 2021 to end of 2022, over 8,600 charge points were added to the UK network, a growth of 30%.

The charge point operator with the largest number of charge points is Ubitricity, with its network of lamppost chargers. It’s followed by Pod Point with its network of destination chargers, found mainly in retail car parks, particularly supermarkets. In third place is BP pulse, which runs an extensive network of rapid and destination chargers across the UK.

The latest figures also show that rapid and ultra-rapid chargers totalled 8,772 devices as of July 2023, spread across 4,657 locations in the UK and with 17,945 connectors. Last month, 325 new rapid and ultra-rapid charging devices were added to the Zapmap database. And since July 2022, there has been a 92% increase in the number of ultra-rapid devices across the country.

The network operating the most rapid or ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging points is InstaVolt, which had 1,172 charge points at the end of July 2023. It was followed by BP Pulse with 1,117 and then Tesla with 1,049.
