Volkswagen’s upgraded ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs are available to order, ushering in higher levels of range, power and technology for 2024 but retaining current prices.

The 2024 VW ID.4 and ID.5 deliver more range, performance and equipment

The sister models are now powered by a new 286hp rear-mounted electric motor for the Pro versions, nabbed from VW’s newly launched ID.7 flagship electric saloon and offering an extra 82hp of power along with a 75% rise in torque, which jumps from 310Nm to 545Nm.

Meanwhile, the top-rung all-wheel-drive ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX now deliver 340hp of power from their dual motors – up 41hp and dropping the 0-62mph sprint for these models to just 5.4 seconds.

Range also climbs as a result of the changes – the combined WLTP figure for the ID.4 Pro family SUV is to 337 miles, 10.5 miles further than before, while the ID.5 coupé-SUV now has a range of up to 339 miles, delivering an extra 11.8 miles.

Charging speed also gets a boost, rising to 135kW for rear-wheel-drive models and from 135kW to 175kW for the all-wheel-drive variants. The latter versions can now recoup around 110 minutes in about 10 minutes.

There’s a range of tech upgrades too – including the arrival of a new-generation infotainment system for both models, featuring a larger 12.9-inch screen and intuitive menu structure and controls that include illuminated sliders for cabin temperature, following driver feedback.

The optional augmented-reality head-up display has been enhanced, and Volkswagen has moved the driving mode selector to the steering column – as with the ID.7 – to create space for the larger infotainment display.

A new IDA voice assistant brings more precise responses to natural voice commands and introduces new functions, including cloud-based weather information and the status of sporting events or even stock market prices.

A premium sound system from Harman Kardon also debuts, replacing the former package and featuring 480 watts of output and 10 speakers. It’s optional on the rear-wheel-drive Pro trims and standard on the 4Motion GTX versions.

Lastly, the Dynamic Chassis Control – available solely on the GTX models as an option – has be rejigged to give a wider spread between comfort and dynamics settings.

The upgraded ID.4 and ID.5 are available to order now, with prices starting from £46,035 for the ID.4 and £50,940 for the ID.5.
