Used electric vehicle sales at record levels

Used electric vehicle sales have soared to record levels, BCA has reported.

BCA is on track to sell well over 40,000 EVs over the next 12 months as the market continues to grow

The first full trading week of 2025 saw nearly 1,000 units sold – with both cars and specialist LCV product featured.

The new record continues the positive sales trends for EVs reported by BCA during 2024 and also reflects the strong start to the new year across the wider used vehicle market.

It additionally puts the company on track to sell well over 40,000 units over the next 12 months as the EV market continues to grow.

In 2023, more than 3,000 different buyers bought an EV from BCA – a 35% increase on the previous year.

Demand is being driven by rising buyer confidence and falling prices, with many used EVs now on a par or cheaper than their ICE equivalent.

Anecdotal reports from buyers suggest that used EV retail sales have got off to a good start in the new year on the back of rising levels of interest from consumers.

The volumes of electric vehicles reaching the remarketing sector are roughly doubling each year. With the ZEV mandate targets for new cars increasing from 22% to 28% for 2025, used EV returns are expected to continue to increase.

Stuart Pearson, BCA chief operating officer, said: “A record broken in the first full trading week of the year certainly sets the tone for trading and provides credibility to the belief that customer perception on used EVs is changing for the good.

“With returns expected to lift significantly this year, we continue to invest in the infrastructure and supporting services to create the best possible wholesale market for used EVs.”

BCA continues to introduce new products and services to support the EV sector. In October 2023, it debuted a new EV battery health grading service to spur confidence among customers.

Said to be a first for the UK remarketing sector, the grading system gives an at-a-glance view of an electric vehicle’s traction battery condition.

The detailed report provides transparency and removes some of the myths surrounding higher-mileage vehicles.
