Vast majority of EV drivers with home chargers still regularly use public charging
The vast majority of EV drivers who have access to home chargers still regularly use public charging infrastructure, a new survey has found.
Research commissioned by charging company Zest found that 88% of EV drivers currently use public charge points, a figure consistent with similar research conducted in 2021.
But it also found that 71% of EV owners able to charge at home still use public charging at least once a week. And nearly a third don’t have a private charge point at home at all, showcasing the value of the infrastructure.
The survey, conducted by CACI to better understand attitudes of both EV and non-EV owners, also revealed a huge opportunity for retail-led destinations and other public places to boost visitor numbers by implementing effective EV charging infrastructure.
Almost all (97%) EV drivers said they would return more often to places with an improved charging experience – and this would also encourage 82% to visit one centre over another.
Robin Heap, Zest CEO, said: “Retail destinations across the UK are seeing just how much value the right EV charging experience can create. Direct revenues, increased footfall and spend, all among a fast-growing cohort who are only now establishing their charging habits. EV charging can revitalise asset values and aligns with consumers’ growing sense of climate responsibility. Add to that the fact it can be implemented at zero cost, as we take on the initial investment and long-term service provision, and you can see why we’re so passionate about rolling out this increasingly vital function now.”
