Vauxhall debuts £33,400 Astra Sports Tourer plug-in hybrid

Vauxhall has announced pricing and specification for its new-gen Astra Sports Tourer – including the model’s first-ever plug-in hybrid.

Priced from £25,005, the estate joins the eighth-generation Astra hatchback launched late 2021 and brings the brand’s latest Vizor front-end styling and 608-1,634 litres of boot space for diesel and petrol-engined models (or 548-1,574 litres for the PHEV).

That compares to 540-1,630 litres for the last-generation and is the result of clever packaging. Based on the same EMP2 architecture as a number of Stellantis models, Vauxhall’s new Astra estate model is 60mm shorter than the previous generation, thanks to a short front overhang, and with a 57mm longer wheelbase compared to the new hatchback.

To enhance practicality, the Sports Tourer adopts a 40:20:40 arrangement for the split rear seats, rather than the more common 60:40, and the floor is completely flat – making it easier to load long and bulky items.

Petrol and diesel variants can be specified with the optional ‘Intelli-Space’ moveable load floor, giving two boot heights and the option to tilt the boot floor at a 45-degree angle. The retractable boot storage cover can be stowed in either position. Intelli-Space also uses underfloor compartments to store the kits for tyre repair and first aid, enabling them to be accessed from the boot or rear passenger seating area, ensuring drivers don’t need to fully unpack the boot.

Engine line-up is carried over from the hatchback and includes the 1.6-litre petrol plug-in Hybrid-e powertrain for the first time; available from launch, it produces 180hp and offers up to 42 miles of electric range. Vauxhall has not announced if the more powerful, 225hp PHEV joining the hatchback this year will make it to the estate.

Petrol engines bring a choice of 110hp 1.2-litre or 130hp 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder units with a six-speed manual transmission, with the turbo variants also available with an eight-speed automatic.

A 130hp 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder diesel is also available, either with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. Models with automatic transmissions feature ‘Stop & Go’ technology.

The specification line-up brings the entry-level and mid-spec Design and GS-Line grades from the hatchback, with the PHEV solely available in the latter.

Standard features for Design variants include 16-inch alloy wheels, the ‘Pure Panel’ infotainment & navigation system debuted on the Mokka, 10-inch colour touchscreen and 10-inch digital instrument cluster, AM/FM/DAB digital radio, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, electronic climate control, keyless start, and front and rear parking sensors.

GS-Line variants start at £27,900 and add in sportier design features such as 17-inch black alloy wheels, black roof and black pack, perforated leather-covered flat-bottom steering wheel, a driver’s ergonomic active sports-style seat certified by Germany’s healthier backs campaign and dark-tinted rear privacy glass.

The GS-Line also gets standard equipment upgrades such as the Intelli-vision 360° panoramic parking camera, heated seats, dual-zone electronic climate control with pollen filter, electronically adjustable and heated folding door mirrors with puddle light, keyless entry and start, and active cruise control.

All models come with latest automated driver assistance systems, including a Driver drowsiness system, eight airbags, lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking.  GS-Line models add in traffic sign recognition.

First deliveries of the new Astra Sports Tourer are due late summer.
