Volkswagen ID.5 electric coupé-SUV debuts with 323-mile range
Volkswagen has revealed its forthcoming ID.5 electric coupé-SUV, which arrives early 2022 with up to a 323-mile range.
Debuted with its GTX performance version, the ID.5 sits above the existing ID.3 hatch and ID.4 SUV, expanding the ID line-up into a new market segment.
As with all ID. models, it’s based on the group’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform and manufactured at the Zwickau plant.
Featuring a 2,766mm wheelbase, it occupies the same footprint as the ID.4 but marks a new departure on styling. Despite its coupé looks, the ID.5 has just 12mm less headroom in the back than the ID.4 while boot space is slightly larger, standing at 549 litres with the rear seats in place.
“The ID.5 is the body style of the future: aerodynamic, expressive, sporty and, thanks to MEB, with short overhangs,” said Jozef Kabaň, head of Volkswagen Design. “That’s how we have been able to ensure a spacious interior despite the dynamic roof line – this simply wasn’t possible before.”
Three powertrains will be offered: an entry-level Pro model with a 174hp rear-mounted electric motor, a mid-range Pro Performance model with a 204hp rear electric motor and the range-topping GTX version with two motors, giving 299hp, four-wheel drive and a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds.
All are powered by the same 77kWh battery, which can be charged at up to 11kW AC via a wallbox or up to 135kW at a DC fast-charge station – up from the 125kW for the ID.4.
It’s equipped with the new ID. software version 3.0, which enables the improvements to charging performance along with enhanced voice control. It also allows for over-the-air updates and activation of additional functions, enabling customers to unlock new features without dealer visits.
Onboard tech includes a driver display and high-resolution multimedia system, plus optional augmented reality head-up display. We Connect services provide drivers with real-time online traffic information, map updates, information about charging stations, web radio, and more.
Assistance technology includes Travel Assist with swarm data using Car2X communication and a new optional Park Assist Plus with memory function.
The new ID.5 and ID.5 GTX are the latest launches under Volkswagen’s Accelerate strategy. By 2030, at least 70% of Volkswagen’s unit sales in Europe are expected to come from electric-only vehicles – equivalent to more than one million vehicles. In North America and China, the goal is for electric vehicles to account for at least 50% of unit sales. The company is planning to become climate-neutral by 2050 at the latest.
