Volkswagen previews £17k entry-level electric car

Volkswagen has given a teaser of its upcoming entry-level electric car ahead of its arrival in 2027.

Expected to be branded as the ID.1, the new fully electric city car will be previewed as a show car in March and will be priced from around €20,000 (£17,000) when it launches in two years’ time.

Announcing the new model during a works meeting at its Wolfsburg headquarters, Volkswagen said the newcomer would be attractive for a wide variety of user groups.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, said: “An affordable, high-quality and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe – that’s the Champions League of automotive engineering!”

It’s part of the new electric small car family developed under the umbrella of the Brand Group Core within the Volkswagen Group and featuring models developed on the latest evolution of VW’s modular electric drive (MEB) platform.

This new product family will also include the production version of the ID. 2all concept. Likely to be badged as the ID.2, this roughly Polo-sized hatch will reach dealerships in 2026 as Volkswagen’s first all-electric small car – at a base price of less than €25,000 (c.£20,800).

Schäfer also confirmed that Volkswagen is working on a new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) architecture that will be used for the next-generation electric Golf as well as the electric T-Roc.

VW said the SSP architecture “will represent the next generation of an all-electric, fully digitalised, highly scalable mechatronics platform based on a uniform system architecture”.

Volkswagen is planning for nine new models by 2027, including the new electric city car and the ID.2.
