Volkswagen showcases ID.7 electric saloon with 435-mile range
Volkswagen is to reveal its ID.7 electric saloon at this week’s CES event, bringing a rival to the Tesla Model 3.
Already previewed with the ID. Aero concept revealed in China, it’s the latest – and flagship – model in the ID family and will deliver a range of up to 435 miles (700km) along with latest tech innovations; hence its unveiling at the world’s largest trade show for electronics.
As with other models in the ID. line-up, the ID.7 is based on VW Group’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) e-car platform, this time expanding the model family into the luxury saloon sector and delivering a spacious interior from the shortage overhangs and long wheelbase.
“With the new ID.7, we are extending our electric model range into the upper segments. The sedan will offer top-class technology and quality. The ID.7 is one of 10 new electric models that we are planning to launch by 2026. Our goal? To deliver suitable products for our customers in every single segment,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars.
It’s the sixth model in the ID. family, joining the ID.3 hatch, ID.4 SUV, ID.5 coupé-SUV and ID.6 (only in China) models along with the new ID. Buzz. The electric saloon will be available in the three primary markets of China, Europe and North America, and the world premiere of the series production version is scheduled for second quarter of 2023.
Technical details are still thin on the ground but the CES model will wear a special QR code-inspired camouflage that creates smart light effects through electroluminescence and can be connected to a sound system, while hiding the outline of the final production vehicle.
The ID.7 will also come with latest innovations as standard, including a new display concept, an augmented reality head-up display, a 15-inch screen, plus new air con controls integrated into the first level of the infotainment system and illuminated touch sliders.
The new air conditioning concept with intelligent vents will deliver new functionality, including detecting when the driver is approaching, based on their key, and starting to cool the interior on hot summer days or heat the interior on cold days, supported by new ‘Smart Air Vents’. Drivers can even use an “Hello Volkswagen, my hands are cold!” command to start the steering wheel heating function.
The new ID.7 expands Volkswagen’s electric mobility campaign further, under its Accelerate strategy. Since the first ID.3 models were handed over to customers in September 2020, the brand has delivered 500,000 vehicles from its ID. family worldwide through its subsidiaries – around one year earlier than planned and despite the ongoing supply chain challenges.
