Volvo ES90 debuts with advanced tech and up to 435 miles of range
Volvo has uncovered its ES90 electric saloon at last, delivering advanced technologies, Scandinavian design and superior comfort.
The BMW i5 challenger is on sale now, priced from £69,650 and with a choice of two trims and three powertrains, delivering up to 435 miles of range.
The ES90 is Volvo’s sixth fully electric model in its line-up, joining the EX90, EM90, EX40, EC40 and EX30. It’s also the second Volvo to be built on the Geely Group Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2), also used for the EX90 along with their Polestar 3 cousin.
Teaser images and details on the car so far have revealed that the S90 successor will be the brand’s most technologically advanced model yet, featuring 800V technology combined with a completely new battery management software and hardware for a longer range and faster charging than any electric Volvo before.
The ES90 is designed to evolve over time and is powered by next-generation core computers that represent an eightfold improvement over the previous generation. It will also be marked out as the most powerful car Volvo has ever created – not in terms of hp but instead of core computing capacity thanks to next-generation core computers that represent an eightfold improvement over the previous generation.
The ES90 is designed to evolve over due to the Swedish brand’s Superset tech stack, a single set of hardware and software modules underpinning all future electric Volvo cars and presenting a “radical transformation” in how the brand can develop and use software to improve levels of safety, technology and overall performance throughout the car’s lifecycle.
Volvo has now revealed the design, which is intended to merge saloon, fastback and SUV elements.
The front features the brand’s Thor’s Hammer headlight design, while the rear has new C-shaped LED rear lamps complemented by LED lamps. The large and wide tailgate hatch aids loading and the boot provides up to 424 litres of loading space. Fold down the three rear seats – all of which can be folded down individually – and the loading space expands to 733 litres. And there’s a 22-litre ‘frunk’ at the front.
The interior puts the focus on “premium comfort, authentic materials and purpose-driven design” and comes with “extremely generous” legroom for second-row passengers, plus six interior ambient light themes and a variety of upholstery options.
Powertrains include Single Motor Extended Range, Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance variants.
The rear-wheel drive Single Motor Extended Range is fitted with a 92kWh battery and delivers 333hp along with up to 403.09 miles of WLTP combined range and 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds.
The Twin Motor is priced from £83,250 and outputs 449hp with all-wheel drive and up to 435 miles of range from its 106kWh battery. It’s able to sprint to 62mph in 5.5 seconds.
The Twin Motor Performance is priced from £87,850 and has the same 435-mile official range from the 106kWh battery but with 680hp of power and a 4.0-second time for the 0-62mph dash. All three have the same 112mph top speed.
The ES90 can also add 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes at 350kW ultra-rapid charging stations.
Two grades – Plus and Ultra – are available in the UK. Standard equipment includes a 14.5-inch infotainment screen with Google built-in, which includes services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant and more apps on Google Play, 9.0-inch driver display, 360-degree camera with 3D view, wireless phone charging and head-up display.
“The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life,” said Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars CEO. “It joins the EX90 SUV as one of our flagship models and cements our position as an industry leader in software-defined cars that harness the power of core computing.”
