Priced from £36,645 and available as five- and seven-seater models, the second generation of the large SUV has been overhauled with a bold new design, increased space, new technology and its first-ever plug-in hybrid.

Built on an updated version of the MQB platform also used for the new Volkswagen Tiguan, the new Kodiaq offers more space than ever before thanks to an even bigger 910-litre boot for the five-seat version, which rises to 2,105 litres with the back row folded down. Seven-seater models offer 340 litres and 2,035 litres respectively.

It’s available with five powertrain choices – including an inaugural plug-in hybrid option with an all-electric driving range of more than 62 miles, rapid DC charging at speeds of up to 50kW and AC charging capacity up to 11kW. The PHEV powertrain will be available with five-seater variants, offering seats-up boot capacity of 745 litres, and due to open for order at a later date.

The launch line-up will include an entry-level 150hp 1.5 TSI e-TEC mild hybrid petrol, priced from £36,645 as a five-seater or £37,505 in two-seater guise, as well as a 204hp 2.0 TSI engine with all-wheel drive as standard, available solely for top-rung seven-seater models and priced at £40,205.

Diesel customers can choose between a 150hp 2.0 TDI unit – priced from £38,945 and £39,805 – and a more powerful version of the same engine outputting 193hp and comes with all-wheel drive as standard. The latter is only available with the top-spec seven-seater and is priced at £46,225.

The all-new Kodiaq comes solely with automatic transmission and a shift-by-wire gear selector that moves to the steering column, freeing up space in the central console area.

Two trim levels, SE and SE L, will be available from launch, with a new SportLine grade to follow.

SE models come with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED front and rear lights, heated front seats and keyless start/stop system. They also feature a Loft design selection and Smart Dials technology as standard, along with a 13-inch sat-nav touchscreen display, 10.25-inch driver display and tri-zone climate control. Standard safety systems include front assist with braking reaction to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, blind spot detection with door exit warning and front cross traffic assist. SE models can be specified with five- or seven-seat layouts with the latter adding a variable boot floor to the standard specification.

SE L models add 19-inch alloy wheels, LED Matrix headlights with AFS (adaptive front light system), AWL (all weather lighting system) and all-weather light with cornering function. The interior upgrades to ecoSuite black design selection with perforated black artificial leather and real leather, electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, electrically operated boot and keyless entry and start/stop system.

First launched in 2016, the Kodiaq has racked up more than 850,000 sales worldwide, including over 55,000 units in the UK.

Order books for the new Kodiaq open on Wednesday 10 April 2024, with first deliveries expected in the summer.
