Drivers will also be given access to 24/7 support and the ChargePoint mobile phone applications, including a map of charging points, availability in real-time, reservations, charging status and turn-by-turn navigation.

The ActiveE is based on BMW’s 1 Series Coupe, but powered by a 168bhp electric motor with 184lb-ft torque. It accelerates to 60mph in nine seconds and has an electronically limited 90mph top speed, while boasting 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity.

A fleet of 1,000 ActiveE trial vehicles are being tested in Europe, China and the US, starting this year, with results due to be fed back into the development of the Megacity electric vehicle planned for 2013 production.

The £22.6m ($37m) ChargePoint network, which will provide 5,000 charging stations across the US when complete, is also gaining 150 new charging points in the Boston Metro area, mostly on the Route 495 Beltway, a major commuter route in and out of the city. Installation is due to start shortly.
