BMW has revealed its third-generation X1 compact crossover, which gains its first-ever fully electric version in the form of the iX1.

The new X1 initially brings a choice of one petrol engine and two diesel engines but will quickly gain two plug-in hybrids along with the iX1 later in the year

On sale now and priced from £35,130, the new X1 initially brings a choice of one petrol engine and two diesel engines but will quickly gain two plug-in hybrids along with the iX1 later in the year, with pricing for them yet to be announced.

The iX1 marks the group’s first premium compact model based on a flexible vehicle architecture to feature an all-electric drive system. Deploying fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, it’s powered by an electric motor at each axle, delivering a combined output of 313hp and overall torque of 494Nm.

The 64.7kWh high-voltage battery gives a driving range of 257 to 272 miles and can be charged at up to 130kW DC, giving a 10-80% boost in 29 minutes. It can also charge at up to 11kW AC or 22kW on three-phase AC as an option, giving a full recharge from empty in 6.5 hours or three hours 45 minutes respectively.

The two plug-in hybrids – the xDrive30e and xDrive25e – both feature an integrated electric motor powering the rear wheels, combined with a three-cylinder petrol engine that drives the front wheels via the seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch. The 14.2kWh lithium-ion battery in both variants delivers an electric-only range of 48-55 miles and can now be charged at a rate of up to 7.4kW, giving a full recharge from empty in 2.5 hours or eight hours on a conventional domestic power socket.

The iX1 and plug-in hybrid variants also get access to the BMW Charging network as standard, bringing lower tariffs for AC and DC charging throughout the UK and Europe and including Ionity charge points.

Among the conventionally powered variants, the entry-level front-wheel drive sDrive18d delivers 150hp and CO2 emissions of 129-145g/km while the xDrive23i and xDrive23d come with all-wheel drive and use 48V mild hybrid technology.

Larger than before and with distinctive new styling, the new X1 also debuts latest connectivity features. It’s offered in a five model line-up from launch – running across Sport Premier, xLine Premier, xLine Premier Pro, M Sport Premier and M Sport Premier Pro designations, all offering increased specifications and simplifying the customer ordering experience.

Highlights include the new BMW Operating System 8 and the brand’s Curved Display, which combines a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch control screen. The new X1 also debuts latest automated driving and parking systems.
