Bypass tracks UK rapid charger rollout with weekly updates

New EV fuel card provider Bypass has launched an initiative to track and publicise the rollout of rapid chargers across the UK.

Bypass’s weekly rapid charger update keeps fleets informed of the progress in the UK’s EV infrastructure

It’s sharing a weekly update every Friday via its LinkedIn page to keep fleets informed of the progress in the UK’s EV charging infrastructure.

Bypass tracks the top rapid charging networks across the UK. These include Gridserve, MFG EV Power, Osprey, Fastned, InstaVolt, Evyve, Ionity, Pod Point, Tesla, BP pulse and Applegreen Electric.

Its new weekly data insights build on Zapmap’s monthly headline data on total charge points by giving regular updates on the high rate of progress in rapid charging deployment, revealing which networks have added new rapids and where.

They also uncover some interesting trends, including far greater deployment of rapid chargers in the south rather than the north.

Latest Zapmap figures show that there were 43,626 electric vehicle charging points across the UK at the end of May 2023, spread across 25,413 charging locations and up 38% year on year. Of the total 43k+ charge points, 8,484 devices were rapid/ultra-rapid across 4,518 locations. Zapmap has also teamed up with the Green Finance Institute to launch a new report mapping out the utilisation of the UK’s charge points – and revealing high demand for ultra-rapid chargers to keep EV drivers on the move.

Bypass is also working to keep EV drivers on the road with its EV fuel card. Widely launched in June, it enables drivers to pay at any public charger across the UK – and automatically get the VAT receipt back – using the Visa network.

According to Bypass founders Jamie Sunderland and Grant MacLennan, the new card “offers more chargers than roaming cards and less hassle than credit cards”. It includes all the UK’s top rapid chargers, meaning that fleets don’t need to drive further away to a specific charger. This in turn saves time and reduces the cost per mile.

Jamie Sunderland commented: “Our aim is to promote new rapid charging locations and highlight the charge point operators who are leading the way.

“We also want to give confidence to fleet managers that the rapid charger coverage is improving every week.”
