Char.gy revamps charging price structure and launches ‘Night Saver’ tariff

On-street charging network Char.gy is introducing a whole new price structure with a new ‘Night Saver’ tariff that it says will cut charging costs for EV drivers.

Char.gy said it’s confident the change is good news for the vast majority of its customers

Under its current set-up, the UK firm offers a pay-as-you-go rate of 42p/kWh along with discounted Personal and Professional subscription tariffs that are now being ditched.

The new structure, announced today and going live from December, will enable drivers to pay less for charging – and the firm has said it’s confident the change is good news for the vast majority of its customers.

Headline news is the arrival of the new ‘Night Saver’ tariff that aims to bring on-street charging in line with the cost of charging at home.

Introduced as power prices soar, the new rate will enable customers to charge vehicles at a lower rate of 29p/kWh from midnight until 7am, the next day. This compares to home charging where the domestic price cap is currently set at around 34p/kWh on a standard variable tariff paying by direct debit.

Meanwhile, the cost of charging between 7am and midnight will rise to 65p/kWh – a figure that’s in line with the average price of on-the-go charging on other networks according to RAC Charge Watch.

Drivers don’t just need to charge overnight on the new pricing structure to make savings according to the firm. It estimates that its customers will pay less than their previous 42p/kWh pay-as-you-go rate if they use its ‘Night Saver’ tariff for 65% of their charging.

Drivers will also be charged solely for the energy they use, on the day they charge, and will benefit from 100% renewable energy while also helping to support the grid with the Night Saver tariff.

Char.gy has also published a table to show how drivers can use one of its standard 5.3kW lamppost chargers to keep their driving costs under 10p per mile and making a significant saving on the 56.2p/kWh average price across all public charging networks.

kWh Start Total cost p/mile Average p/kWh Mileage
Small 20 23:30 £6.75 8.4 £0.34 80
Medium 35 22:30 £13.01 9.3 £0.37 140
Large 50 21:30 £19.27 9.6 £0.39 200

Char.gy CEO Richard Stobart said: “During this crucial time, we recognise the frustrating disparity between charging rates for motorists with driveways and those without. The introduction of our new Night Saver tariff aims to provide a solution by giving all EV motorists access to the most competitive rates through our renewables-based charging service. This also supports the UK’s drive for greater energy security and more renewable energy, because more EV energy demand will occur when national energy demand is at its lowest.”
