City of York installs first rapid chargers

By / 10 years ago / International News / No Comments

The 50kW charging points can top up compatible vehicles to 80% of their battery capacity in less than half an hour, and are accessed via the Charge Your Car smartphone app or swipe card.

Located at the Sports Village and Poppleton Bar park and ride, the units new will be used to support the uptake of electric buses and taxis, as well as private vehicles, and build on an existing network of 21kW AC chargers in the city centre.

Twin charging points are also being rolled out across Bootham Row car park and the park and ride sites at Askham Bar and Poppleton. At all sites, users are charged 15p per kWh of energy, plus a 30p transaction fee, said to work out at around 3.7p per mile.

Cllr Dave Merrett, Cabinet Member for environmental services, planning and sustainability, said: ‘Using electric vehicles means a 50 to 60 percent reduction in CO2 and zero fuel-related emissions of air pollutants, with significantly lower running costs than diesel, which makes them ideal for businesses and others in the York’s area.’
