EV-suitable tyres could bump up range 7%, says Michelin

Electric vehicle drivers could gain around 700 miles of additional mileage and pocket £119 in savings per year by simply having EV-suitable tyres, according to Michelin.

Research by the global tyre firm indicates that EV tyres can extend the range of a car by 7% or the equivalent of 18 miles per charge on a vehicle with 250-mile range (WLTP).

Michelin also calculated the potential number of extra miles gained and money saved for the 570,561 registered EVs able to be fitted with e-Primacy tyres fitted in the UK.

It found that the total range added for all cars was 495 million miles and the total amount saved for all cars was £84m in a year.

John Howe, managing director for UK & Ireland, said: “EV-suitable tyres not only enhance battery range, allowing drivers to travel further per charge, but these tyres last longer on an electric car than a standard tyre.

“Getting an additional 700 miles and making £120 in savings per year simply by having EV suitable tyres is an easy win for drivers.”

Michelin has also revealed the top 10 vehicles set to gain the most miles and saving per charge. Its analysis suggests the Hyundai Ioniq 6 would travel an extra 26 miles and make a saving of £4.55 per charge. The Tesla Model 3 (24 extra miles per charge, £4.12 saving per charge) came in second while the Volkswagen ID.5 and Mercedes EQA would both gain an extra 23 miles per charge and save £4.03 and £3.93, respectively.

The extra range is the result of technology in EV-suitable tyres such as lower rolling resistance and features in a tyre’s side walls to absorb less energy, which allow for an extended battery range.

“A great deal of innovation and research goes into producing a tyre that can increase the range of an electric car. It requires the incorporation of several new tyre technologies to lower rolling resistance, increase efficiency and optimise the handling characteristics of electric cars.

“Beyond the numbers, it reflects a step towards making electric mobility not only more environmentally attractive but also more economically appealing and this gives EV users more freedom and flexibility in their daily travels,” concluded Howe.
