Euro NCAP has published its first results of 2022, awarding five-star ratings to new models including fully electric vehicles and hybrids.

The Megane E-Tech Electric was praised for its high levels of all-round safety and an especially good child occupant score of 88%

Published as the organisation marks its 25th year, the ratings run across seven vehicles, of which four earned the full five stars. These include the facelifted Volkswagen Polo, which has gained new centre airbags and more capable crash avoidance systems, and the brand’s new Taigo crossover.

The Megane E-Tech Electric hatchback, the first Renault model based on its new dedicated EV platform, also scored the top safety rating and Euro NCAP lauded its improved body and restraint systems, and strong performance from advanced driver assistance systems such as AEB.

The Lexus NX, available as a fully hybrid and plug-in hybrid, gained five stars, while the BMW 2 Series Coupé was awarded four stars, due to limited performance from its autonomous emergency braking system in more challenging scenarios such as a cyclist crossing and turning across path.

Euro NCAP also published the ratings for the Volkswagen ID.5, which shares the 2021 five-star rating awarded to the nearly identical ID.4, and the Ford Tourneo Connect, twin of the five-star Volkswagen Caddy.

The results were welcomed by Thatcham Research, which said they marked a great start to the year from a safety perspective.

Matthew Avery, chief research strategy officer, continued: “And although there are several conventionally fuelled vehicles here, we are continuing to see more and more EV options for consumers with strong safety credentials.

“It’s also good to see a return to five-star form for Renault. The Megane E-Tech has high levels of all-round safety and an especially good child occupant score of 88% – making it a great EV choice for families.

“VW has added three more five-star vehicles to its range, with the ID.5, Taigo and Polo. It’s particularly pleasing to see a popular car like the VW Polo proving that it is possible to create a lower cost but still super-safe, supermini.”
