Intended to drive the eco and cost-saving benefits of EVs through the use of renewable energy, the charging stations will be available in Germany as well as other European markets and will enable customers to configure charging times to maximise the usage of the solar power available in the grid, via an app.

Fleets using photovoltaics will also be able to drive the benefits – according to the firms, using solar power to charge EVs is around half the cost of using power from a mixed or non-renewable grid.

Udo Möhrstedt, founder and CEO of IBC Solar, explained: “EVs will only produce less emissions if they are being powered by clean energy, such as solar-generated power. When the eMobility market takes off in 2018, photovoltaics, EVs, and charging infrastructure will have to be part of the same discussion.”
