Mercedes-Benz Announces 109gpkm E-Class Hybrid

By / 12 years ago / International News / No Comments

On sale next year, European markets will be offered an E300 BlueTEC Hybrid, with a Euro 6 compliant four-cylinder, 201bhp diesel engine and a 27bhp electric  motor. This returns 67.3mpg and emits 109g/km CO2, equating to a 15% reduction compared to the E250 CDI.

The E400 Hybrid, which will be introduced in America before ahead of launches in China and Japan, has a 301bhp V6 petrol engine and the same 27bhp electric motor, resulting in fuel economy of 32.4mpg on the combined cycle.

Both models feature regenerative braking, as well as stop/start technology and a system which shuts off the engine when the driver lifts off the throttle at high speed to save fuel. The drivetrain also allows the cars to be driven on electricity only, supplied by the lithium ion battery pack, or combine the electric motor with the internal combustion engine for a power boost.

Because the new powertrain is modular, it can be fitted to both petrol and diesel engines and both saloon and estate models without additional bodywork modifications. As a result, there is no reduction in cabin or boot space and limited additional cost attached to the hybrid technology.

Professor Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler board member for group research and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars development, said: ‘With these two E-Class models we are now continuing our comprehensive hybrid offensive. The modular technology opens up a quick way for us to complement other model series with hybrid models.

‘With a clear focus on the different requirements of global markets, we are able to offer precisely the models which our customers want. The E-Class hybrids provide a clear reduction in consumption as well as a very impressive driving experience: they represent hybrid motoring at the premium level.’

Prices will be announced closer to the launch.
