New BMW X2 revealed with first-ever iX2 electric sibling

BMW has launched its second-generation X2 SUV-coupé alongside the first-ever iX2 electric variant.

The iX2 offers fully electric driving with up to 366 miles of range

Starting deliveries from March 2024, the latest X2 “sports activity coupé” crossover delivers new standout styling, extra space and more technology while the iX2 offers fully electric driving with up to 366 miles of range.

An increased footprint sees the X2 grow in all dimensions, giving extra shoulder and elbow room for all occupants along with increased kneeroom in the rear. Boot space for conventional powertrains now stands at 560 litres, up by 90 litres and rising to 1,470 litres (+ 115 litres) with the rear seats down. The mild hybrid X2 sDrive20i has a boot capacity of 515-1,400 litres, while the fully electric iX2 offers between 525 and 1,400 litres.

The iX2 uses fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and is available in a single xDrive 30 M Sport version. This features a dual-motor setup, delivering all-wheel drive and generating 313hp (including temporary boost) with 494Nm of torque. It dispatches the 0 to 62mph sprint in 5.6 seconds and has an electronically governed top speed of 112mph.

The 64.8kWh battery gives an official WLTP range of 259 to 266 miles and enables AC charging up to 11kW as standard, giving a 0 to 100% recharge in 6.5 hours. Customers can also choose three-phase AC charging up to 22kW as an option, cutting the charging time to three hours 45 minutes. The iX2 also enables DC charging up to 130kW, giving a 10 to 80% recharge in 29 minutes.

The electric crossover also comes with the latest version of BMW’s Max Performance Charging software, which cuts charging times by following a smoother charging rate rather than the “stepped” curve used before. The software also makes it possible to top up the battery at the full charging rate from a higher starting state of charge of up to 50%.

Adaptive regenerative braking also helps to conserve battery reserves and boost energy recuperation while a Max Range function that’s new to BMW’s EVs scales back power and vehicle comfort functions to increase range by up to 25%.

Two petrol variants are also on offer: the X2 sDrive20i featuring a three-cylinder 1.5-litre engine with 48V mild hybrid tech. It delivers 170hp along with a 0-62mph time of 8.3 seconds and combined fuel consumption of 43.50-47.1mpg with CO2 emissions of 139-148g/km.

At the top of the range is the M35i XDrive, powered by a new four-cylinder petrol unit that’s taken from BMW’s latest modular generation of engines and produces 300hp and 400Nm peak torque. It enables 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds, while emitting up to 181g/km WLTP and with fuel consumption up to 36.7mpg.

Prices for the X2 start at £39,365 for the sDrive20i, rising to £47,395 for the M35i XDrive while the iX2 comes in from £56,540.

All variants will be produced on a single assembly line at BMW Group Plant Regensburg.

New onboard technology includes the BMW Curved Display, combining a 10.25-inch driver’s display and a 10.7-inch touchscreen. Infotainment is powered by the new BMW Operating System 9 and includes a QuickSelect feature.

New services include a Digital Premium package that enables customers to use a range of apps, e.g., for music streaming, video streaming or news on a subscription basis. BMW has also paired up with gaming platform AirConsole to make a wide selection of games available.

Standard features include a navigation system, two-zone automatic climate control and a raft of driver assistance systems, along with Park Assist including Reversing Assist Camera.

The X2 and iX2 will receive their world premiere at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo on 26 October 2023.
