It marks the first use of Toyota’s TNGA-B platform – which also underpins its Yaris Cross compact SUV due 2021 – and is shorter, wider and lower than the current model, using intelligent packaging to maximise interior space.

As well as introducing a bolder design and higher-quality materials, including a Yaris-first of a soft-touch instrument panel, it also heralds the first use of the new TNGA three-cylinder, fourth-generation hybrid system.

The 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain is directly derived from the larger 2.0- and 2.5-litre systems that were introduced in the new Corolla, RAV4 and Camry models, and features a three-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine with variable valve-timing. WLTP-rated CO2 stands at 92-98g/km.

In the UK, it will be offered with a choice of four trims – Icon, Design, Dynamic and Excel – plus a special high-specification Launch Edition.
