Rapid EV charging solution launches for off-grid fleet sites

A new rapid charging solution able to replenish electric vehicles without the requirement for a grid connection has launched this week.

The new solution is aimed at fleets, landowners and motorway service stations seeking rapid charging services without a grid connection and costly civil works

Developed by Cardiff-based Plug Charging, it’s aimed at fleets, landowners and motorway service stations looking for rapid charging services without a grid connection and costly civil works.

The static units are the same size as a storage container and use green hydrogen to generate electricity without putting extra strain on the grid.

The power generated by each static can charge a minimum of two charging guns at a speed of up to 150kWh and can be re-configured to suit specific requirements.

The system will be supported by an app and provides a full turnkey solution for operators and sites where EV charging was previously not viable.

The company, which launched in the UK in 2022, said it’s already secured orders from shopping centres, airports, local authority locations and car park providers.

Jarrad Morris, CEO of Plug Charging, said: “This technology is a game-changer for locations looking at providing EV charging, and we hope it will increase the speed at which we realise a more sustainable transport system. Our solution means that people can charge quickly, conveniently and more sustainably than ever before, giving off-grid or low-grid capacity locations the ability to put in place much-needed EV charging infrastructure, which previously would have been challenging.”

Other interested parties include motorway service providers across the UK, spurred by the Department for Transport’s plan to have at least six high-powered, open-access charge points at motorway service areas in England by 2023.

“Many of these locations find it difficult to secure big enough grid connections, or the cost of securing them is prohibitive. Our solution addresses both of these problems,” added Morris.

The new solution has been unveiled alongside Plug Charging’s new mobile charging unit and shares many of the same features. The new mobile chargers also use off-grid green hydrogen and other green fuels, combined with an onboard power generation system that enables each unit to charge at a speed of up to 130kWh – giving a 0 to 80% charge in around 30 minutes.

The power is supplied off-grid via mobile vans, which operate like an EV charge delivery service, allowing people to charge their vehicles at their convenience, while only requiring once a day. The mobile units are being rolled out in a set of pilots in London before the arrival of a consumer solution in January 2023.

Speaking on the mobile solution, Jarrad Morris said: “We’re delivering electricity to where it is needed, all booked via our app.

“We hope the convenience of this solution will grow electric vehicle adoption exponentially and make electric vehicles a viable choice for everyone, regardless of their living arrangements and access to charging.”
