Renault is reviving its iconic F4 van as an all-electric model – although its rollout to the UK market is still up in the air.
The legendary Renault 4 from the 1960s was rebooted earlier this year as a retro-futuristic crossover for the electric era and the French automaker is now bringing a commercial version out, drawing on the original Renault 4 van or ‘F4 Fourgonnette’.
Built for tradespeople, delivery drivers, service companies and fleets as “an alternative to conventional electric vans”, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric Van continues the legacy of the Renault 4, whose F4 van variant offered a load capacity of 300kg.
The N1-approved variant “offers the style and comfort of a passenger car” while delivering added cargo capacity. Renault has replaced the rear seats and belts with a thermoformed tray with a load-stop system and lashing hooks. Cargo space is increased to 1,045 litres – including an underfloor area of 55 litres for storing the charging cable – and the eLCV newcomer also gets a payload of up to 375kg and a load length of 1.2m.
As an option, the passenger area can be separated from the loading space by a grid while vehicles may be equipped with a luggage cover, an anti-slip mat or a function to disable the opening of the rear windows and doors, depending on the country of sale.
The vehicles are converted by Qstomize at the Manufacture Ampere in Maubeuge (ElectriCity), where the Renault 4 E-Tech is built.
The passenger car version is offered with two powertrains, which are carried over to the van version, depending on the market.
The entry-level model features a 40kWh battery, powering a 120hp front-mounted motor to offer a WLTP range of up to 191 miles (308km). It’s coupled to an 80kW DC onboard charger.
The longer-range version ups this to a 52kWh battery and more powerful 150hp motor, delivering a WLTP range of up to 254 miles (409km).
Both include an 11kW AC bi-directional charger, along with a DC charger of 80kW for the smaller battery and 100kW for the larger. Charging the battery from 15% to 80% with the 11 kW AC charger takes two hours 37 minutes and three hours 13 minutes respectively. The DC fast charger cuts this to 30 minutes.
It’s already open for orders in France, where it’s priced from €29,300 (c.£25,365) before VAT but a spokesperson for Renault said the R4 van is undergoing evaluation for the UK and is yet to be confirmed.
