Škoda has given the latest taster of its upcoming Epiq baby EV, which premieres this summer with prices around the £25k mark and up to 267 miles of range.

The compact SUV – described as a “city SUV crossover” – was teased as a near-production show car at the Munich Motor Show late last summer and has now been previewed in zingy camouflaged form. The Czech brand has also uncovered more tech details.

Positioned as an entry point to the brand’s BEV range, it will be the most affordable fully electric Škoda model, offering price parity with the petrol-powered Kamiq in many markets.

It’s based on the same MEB Entry front-wheel-drive architecture as the new Volkswagen ID. Polo, ID. Cross and Cupra Raval, which were also showcased at last year’s Munich Motor Show and form part of the Volkswagen Brand Group Core, under which the group’s brands will launch entry-level models for electric mobility.

It joins the Elroq and Enyaq in Škoda’s growing EV battalion and will “make electric mobility even more accessible and attract new customer groups to the brand”. It will also be a cornerstone of the carmaker’s strategy to double its all-electric portfolio by 2026.

Klaus Zellmer, chief executive of Škoda Auto, said: “This smart SUV crossover marks a significant expansion of our range, combining attractive design, generous space and affordability to appeal to entirely new customer groups.”

Škoda promises compact dimensions with a spacious interior, making the Epiq easy to manoeuvre in dense city centres, narrow streets and on winding roads, but with a roomy cabin.

Thanks to the new MEB+ platform, the Škoda Epiq offers one of the largest boots in its class, starting with 475 litres seats up – 75 litres more than in the Kamiq – and up to 1,344 litres seats down. The interior gets 25 litres of additional storage space and, Škoda aficionados take note, there are new Simply Clever features, such as an easily accessible compact bag for securing charging cables, attached to the top-tether hooks in the boot. Old favourites such as the umbrella in the door, the parking ticket holder and the ice scraper made from recycled materials also feature.

Powertrain line-up for the UK is yet to be confirmed but the European portfolio will include two different battery options paired with varying motor outputs.

The entry-level Epiq 35 comes with the smaller 38.5kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery and a 116hp motor, while the more powerful Epiq 40 gets the same battery but uprates power to 135hp.

The top-of-the-range Epiq 55 offers 211hp of power and features a 55kWh battery that offers greater energy density, higher capacity and longer range for the headline figure.

All three variants can be charged with 11kW AC power, while DC charging is available at up to 50, 90 and 133kW, depending on the variant. The Epiq 55 can go from 10 to 80% capacity in 23 minutes.

The Epiq also marks brand breakthroughs for styling. It’s the first model to fully adopt Škoda’s Modern Solid design language, applied inside and out. The T-shaped light signature makes its first appearance on a Škoda production car and will become the signature lighting feature of other models in the future, according to chief designer Oliver Stefani.

The interior adopts “clean lines that evoke a feeling of trust and cosiness” and also homes in on sustainability. It comes with a choice of three Škoda ‘Design Selections’; the brand’s theme-based interior configurations that replace traditional trim levels. All use 100% recycled polyester (PES) for the seat textiles. Studio is the entry-level option. Loft is available in shades of grey or mint green, featuring a new embossed pattern and Techtona, a synthetic leather alternative, on the dashboard and door panels. The top-of-the-range Suite selection features seats with embossed Suedia and Techtona upholstery in Tabora Brown, with the same material used on the dashboard and door inserts. Both Loft and Suite include ambient lighting.

Tech-wise, a 13-inch central display is standard, and there’s a 5.3-inch driver display. Safety features haven’t been detailed yet but advanced driver-assistance systems, including Travel Assist 3.0, will be available, along with “features typically found in higher segments”.

The Epiq will make its world premiere in the first half of this year, joining the Elroq plus the Enyaq SUV and Coupé variants.

According to the brand, the Elroq ranked as the second best-selling BEV in Europe last year, while the Enyaq secured seventh place, giving the brand two models in the European BEV Top 5 and placing the brand fourth overall among fully electric vehicles.
