Subaru has christened its first electric vehicle ‘Solterra’ and revealed it will launch globally mid-2022.

The midsize SUV is being jointly developed with Toyota on the carmakers’ dedicated new e-TNGA electric car platform; the result of a tie-up announced two years ago.

The joint venture combines Subaru’s expertise in all-wheel drive technology with Toyota’s vehicle electrification technology.

Toyota has already previewed its bZ4X concept at the Shanghai Motor Show, based on the platform and providing the first in a new electric vehicle family for Toyota.

Subaru said the name Solterra has been formed from the Latin words for ‘Sun’ and ‘Earth’ to represent its commitment to deliver traditional SUV capabilities in an environmentally responsible package.

The Subaru will launch in markets including Japan, the US, Canada, Europe and China by the middle of 2022.

It joins Subaru’s existing line-up of SUVs, including the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek and Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid, and furthers its existing work in electrification.
