Volkswagen ID.4 all-electric SUV to bring 323-mile range
Volkswagen has revealed its ID.4 compact SUV, which arrives later this year as the brand’s first fully electric SUV and its first global EV.
It’s the second model in VW’s fast-expanding ID. line-up, following in the footsteps of the recently launched ID.3 hatchback. Like the ID.3, it’s built on the brand’s MEB (modular electric drive matrix) platform developed solely for EVs, which enables it to take a bottom-up approach to vehicle design, and VW says it brings a new approach to interior design that enables it to offer space akin to a midsize SUV while it will also offer luggage capacity from 543 to 1,575 litres. Practicality will be enhanced by an electrically opening boot lid, roof railings and a towing bracket.
Not only does the ID.4 boast the credential of being the brand’s first fully electric SUV, but it’s also VW’s first global electric car. Alongside Europe, where the compact SUV is fast-rising in popularity, it will also be sold in China and eventually the US; two markets where compact SUVs are actually now the most popular vehicle segment, according to VW. The ID.4 is also said to be generate zero local emissions and be produced with a carbon-neutral balance.
The launch model features a 204hp electric motor, positioned on the rear axle, and giving a 0-62mph time of 8.5 seconds along with a top speed of 99mph. Its rear-wheel drive, along with 21cm of ground clearance, also gives it the ability to go off-road in what VW classes as “gentle” terrain.
The 77kWh battery in the launch edition enables a range of up to 323 miles and is positioned below the passenger compartment for a low centre of gravity. It can be charged at rates up to 125kW, giving a 199-mile range in around 30 minutes.
The ID.4 also boasts a whole new operating concept, according to VW, with no physical buttons or switches. Instead, infotainment and functions such as heating are accessed via two displays, one of which is up to 12 inches and with touchscreen functionality as well as “Hello ID” natural voice control. Onboard tech also includes an augmented reality head-up display, Discover Pro navigation system with We Connect Start online services and IQ.Drive assist systems. Over-the-air software updates will be provided.
Pricing and specification will be announced in the coming weeks.
