First unveiled at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show, the hatchback cum saloon reinvents the Mazda6 for the electric age and will be priced from £38,995, squaring up to the Tesla Model 3.

Although other markets in Europe get a choice of 68.8kWh LFP or 80kWh NCM batteries, the UK-specification Mazda6e features a 78kWh LFP battery delivering a 348-mile combined range.

The Japanese brand said this version combines the best of both in terms of range, performance and charging times. It’s capable of charging at up to 195kW DC, giving a 10 to 80% charge in 24 minutes.

The rear-wheel-drive Mazda6e also delivers 258hp of power that’s good for 62mph in 7.9 seconds and with 290Nm of torque.

Bringing a fresh take on the well-regarded Mazda6, the sleek hatchback is designed under the concept of ‘Electrifying Design Crafted to Perfection’ and introduces the next evolution of Mazda’s ‘Kodo Soul of Motion’ design philosophy.

Styling takes saloon-style proportions but gives hatchback functionality in a best-of-both-worlds approach. Design features include a low roofline and short-deck coupé silhouette, along with frameless doors and a bold lighting signature, plus 19-inch wheels with a sporty five-spoke design and an electronically extendable rear spoiler. The Mazda6e also features a 336-litre boot, along with passenger space said to be excellent and a 72-litre front boot.

The cabin is designed for a spacious feel and is equipped with a floating centre console and instrument panel along with a panoramic roof and premium materials for both grades. Entry-level Takumi models will feature black or stone Maztex artificial leather, while Takumi Plus offers premium tan Nappa leather with artificial suede cloth woven fabric seat trim.

The interior also comes with a smart driver-focused cockpit that features a 14.6-inch touchscreen and a 10.2-inch instrument set, complemented by an augmented reality head-up display.

Jeremy Thomson, managing director, Mazda Motors UK, said: “With a UK price that sees both models under £40,000, this value proposition is even more tempting when you see the huge tally of equipment and technology fitted as standard across both the Takumi and Takumi Plus. The Mazda6e is also a car that positions Mazda strongly in the expanding D-segment BEV fleet market, where the car’s blend of style, value, practicality and desirability will, I’m sure, win over business users.”

The Mazda6e was originally developed as the EZ-6 by Changan Mazda for China, but has been heavily revised to meet buyer demands in the UK and Europe. Suspension, power steering and braking have been calibrated by the team at Mazda Research Europe in Frankfurt to match UK preferences and expectations of the Mazda driver experience.

It launches as Mazda also ramps up for the arrival of the CX-6e SUV late 2026 as an electric counterpart to the CX-60 and a rival to the Audi Q6.

Thomson added: “In the UK we are facing some unique and complex challenges in the balance between EV legislation and consumer demand but at Mazda we will introduce new models and ensure our product range fits the pace of actual consumer demand in the UK with technologies that are amongst the best in the market. The arrival of the Mazda6e in UK showrooms this summer is perfect, it’s a fantastic and timely addition to our multi-solution approach that includes mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric offerings.”
