Be.EV has launched the UK’s first subscription-style ‘Charging Pass’, shifting the UK electric vehicle market toward a subscription model inspired by mature Nordic markets such as Denmark.
The new subscription tiers allow drivers to pay a predictable monthly fee for a set kilowatt-hour (kWh) allowance, eliminating the need to track peak, off-peak or fluctuating per-kWh rates.
There are two passes available at launch. Drivers can save up to £600 annually with the Go Pass, which costs £49 a month for a 120kWh allowance that’s enough for around 400 miles.
Higher-mileage drivers can opt for the Go Further Pass, at £89 a month for 250kWh, which accumulates to around 800 miles and could save up to £1,416 a year compared with the average UK pay-as-you-go ultra-rapid rate.
Drivers who use their full allowance roll onto Be.EV’s Off-Peak rate of 49p/kWh for the rest of the billing period, which is still well below the standard pay-as-you-go rate. That makes the Go Pass 51% cheaper and the Go Further Pass 57% cheaper than the UK average public ultra-rapid charging price of 83p/kWh for drivers who use their full allowance.
Asif Ghafoor, chief executive of Be.EV, said subscription and allowance-based charging is becoming the norm in Europe’s most mature EV markets, and the UK is now following suit.
“As adoption grows, drivers want the same simplicity they get from a mobile phone contract: one fee, a set amount of charging, no surprises. That’s what Charging Passes give them,” he added.
The passes sit alongside a simplified line-up of fixed-rate subscriptions. The Mega, Be.EV’s most popular subscription since launch, will continue to unlock 39p/kWh at any time of day, now renamed the Flexi Pass and priced at £13.99 a month, up from £9.99. Flexi Pass subscribers still save 25% against the UK average PAYG price after their second charge.
Be.EV has also introduced a single standard price across daytime PAYG and Member charging, along with a new Member Off-Peak rate of 49p/kWh between 7pm and 7am – up from 49p/kWh but said to be still the longest off-peak window of any public network in the UK. In a new move, members will also earn Tesco Clubcard points on every charging session, day or night.
