EV-only car sharing club goes live in Malta

The first car sharing club in Malta has now launched, bringing EV-only motoring to the island.

The scheme provides 150 Renault Zoes around locations in Malta and Gozo

Dubbed GoTo Malta, the government-backed initiative offers 150 Renault Zoes at locations throughout Malta and Gozo. Vehicles can be booked via an app and are available 24 hours a day.

The scheme will help lower emissions while also making a significant contribution to achieving Malta’s goal of 5,000 EVs by 2020, including through increasing EV awareness. It will also deploy 225 charging pillars around the island, each with two charging points, helping to substantially enhance the islands public charging infrastructure.

It’s also expected to reduce parking issues on the island; the government has pledged to provide 450 parking spaces throughout Malta and Gozo that are reserved exclusively for the GoTo Malta Renault ZOEs and which will be strategically located in high-use parking areas.

It’s also expected to lower the cost of travel; GoTo Malta has calculated that its service is around only half the cost of local taxis.

Liran Golan, CEO of GoTo Malta, said: “Renault ZOE is the perfect vehicle to launch GoTo Malta, being spacious, versatile and easy to use. Its all-electric drivetrain fits perfectly with our ambition for sustainable motoring that is affordable and convenient, while also lowering air and noise pollution in Malta and, ultimately, being a platform to increase electric vehicle usage on the island and help address the country’s congestion and parking issues.”
