Google adds EV charging points to Maps app

The Google Maps smartphone app now includes the ability to search for the nearest available electric vehicle charging points, displaying detailed information about connectivity and charge speeds at each site.

Chargemaster Polar site

Tesla, Geniepoint, Chargemaster and Pod Point chargers are listed on Google Maps.

Available via an update of the Android and iOS apps, the new function is compatible with Tesla and Chargepoint’s global networks and, in the UK, with Chargemaster and Polar points.

Drivers can search for keywords, such as “EV charging” or “EV charging stations” and the nearest compatible units will be shown, Google said. Additional information shown includes the number and type of connector, the charging speeds available, the business where they are located, and ratings and photos from drivers.

The update also adds detailed multi-modal route planning; scheduling departure times around delays, traffic and public transport schedules with live bus and train locations for 80 regions worldwide. Google said this will enable commuters to “know if you can spend an extra few minutes grabbing a coffee, or if you really do need to make a run for it to catch your bus.”
