Action to improve the nation’s resilience to climate change is failing to keep pace with the impacts of a warming planet and the increasing risks facing the UK.
The Government’s 2040 target of ending sales of new petrol and diesel cars/vans is too late to tackle climate change and should be moved to 2030, according to its official environmental advisors.
The Committee on Climate Change has warned the Government to make urgent tax vehicle tax reforms in this year’s Autumn Budget, to stop uptake of ultra-low emission vehicle sales from stalling.
Far-reaching action on transport – including changes to company car tax – are needed to ensure the Government meets legally-binding targets emissions targets.
Current ultra-low emission vehicle market growth would already be on track to meet milestones on electric vehicle sales ambitions even if the deadline were brought forward.
