The new trim sit above the existing Design and adds in styling and equipment upgrades, drawing on the brand’s multi-world-championship-winning Toyota Gazoo Racing motorsport division.

Exterior additions include 19-inch black alloy wheels, black wheel arch trims, side mouldings and back door garnish. There’s more prominent fog light bezels at the front with the same black G-mesh pattern as the new upper grille and a new front under-run finished in gunmetal grey. Badges on the front grille and back door also display the GR Sport name while customers can add in the optional panoramic roof or bi-tone exterior paint finish.

The interior gains sports front seats using suede-effect and synthetic leather trim along with silver stitching and silver trim detailing. The GR logo is also featured across the cabin.

Equipment is based on the Design grade and includes the Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system with a 10.5-inch screen, 12.3-inch driver’s display and smartphone integration.

Driver assistance features deliver the Toyota Safety Sense package of systems, including Emergency Steering Assist and an enhanced Pre-Collision System. The GR Sport also gets blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert.

Other features include power-adjustable front seats with memory settings for the driver, head-up display, paddle shifts, wireless mobile phone charger, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic view monitor as standard.

The GR Sport also gets the Design grade’s power tailgate, smart entry and push-button start, reversing camera and front parking sensors.

The all-wheel-drive PHEV powertrain is unchanged, teaming up a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an 18.1kWh battery powering two electric motors. It delivers 306hp of power – 38% more than the RAV4 Hybrid – giving 0-62mph acceleration in 6.0 seconds.

The RAV4 GR Sport Plug-in Hybrid is available to order now, price £48,990 on the road.
