Volvo is ramping up production of its new EX60 medium electric SUV just weeks after the car’s public reveal.

Uncovered last month as the electric sibling to the Swedish brand’s best-selling XC60 SUV, the EX60 sets new benchmarks for range, charging speed and performance, while also representing “the next frontier” in safety.

Barely a month after the car’s public reveal, nearly all major European markets are reporting retail orders considerably higher than internal forecasts.

Volvo said the pace of the order intake is significantly higher than it was for the EX30 small SUV after its global reveal in 2023 – and noted that EX60 order books are only open in European markets. US order books for the EX60 will open later this spring.

Demand is so high that the brand is now planning an increase in production of the EX60 at its Torslanda plant in Sweden.

The company is in dialogue with relevant labour unions, with the aim of keeping the site open for one extra week in the summer, which would be the first time in the company’s history.

Erik Severinson, chief commercial officer at Volvo Cars, said: “That so many customers ordered the EX60 in the first month has surpassed our expectations, and it’s a good ‘problem’ to have

“We are very encouraged to see such strong demand for our game-changing electric SUV, and we are now reviewing our production plans for 2026, as we gear up for the start of customer car production next month.”

The EX60, revealed at the end of January, is designed to be a game changer for Volvo Cars and its customers.

On sale from September and priced in line with the company’s XC60 plug-in hybrid, the fully electric SUV will be available with three different powertrain variants and battery sizes, delivering up to 503 miles of range.

At the same time, the EX60 can add up to 211 miles of range in 10 minutes when using a 400kW fast charger.
