Chinese carmaker Aion has revealed details of its UT electric hatchback ahead of sales opening in September.

Bringing the fight to the Renault 5 and the Volkswagen ID. Polo, the electric supermini is designed to offer the space and premium features of lower medium hatchbacks. First customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in October.

It’s the second model to launch from Aion – the electric vehicle subsidiary of the state-owned Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Group) – and follows the debut of the Aion V electric SUV earlier this year. The brand plans to further flesh out its line-up with parent firm GAC’s Trumpchi S7 PHEV in early 2027.

Aion says the UT will “reset” what UK motorists can expect from a B-segment supermini in terms of class-leading space, quality, refinement and premium-level features.

The electric hatchback features a 60kWh battery that provides 268 miles of range, billed as the longest standard range in its class, and is capable of charging from 30-80% in 24 minutes.

Power comes from a hefty 204hp motor that sprints from 0-62 mph in 7.3 seconds, making it one of the nippiest superminis on the market.

The styling of the UT blends compact European hatchback proportions with a futuristic, friendly ‘tech-toy’ look that was styled for Europe at GAC’s design studio in Milan and features clean curves and optimised cabin space. The front-end gets owl-inspired headlights and a 2×2 ‘ice cube’ indicator and DRL cluster.

Aion has also benchmarked quality and space for the family-friendly interior, which comes with plush materials and equipment that includes heated front seats, 14.6-inch central touchscreen and 360-degree surround-view camera.

The single trim level can be enhanced with an optional Premium Pack that adds panoramic glass roof, powered tailgate, ventilated driver’s seat and wireless phone charging.

The UT has also been engineered for UK roads, going beyond the work already undertaken on the Aion V earlier this year. As well as modifications to the springs, dampers, bump-stops and calibration, the UT also gets a revised anti-roll bar.

Jon Wakefield, managing director of Aion Auto UK, described the UT “as a small car that acts big on longer journeys”.
