Athlon UK has backed the BVRLA’s Used EV Week, spotlighting the strategic importance of second-hand electric vehicles in the UK’s transition to zero-emission transport.

Used EVs provide a perfect stepping stone for fleets ahead of widespread electrification

The BVRLA campaign runs from 20 to 24 October and highlights the vital role that the used vehicle market plays in the EV transition.

Athlon UK is supporting the awareness campaign, recognising the strategic, environmental, and financial significance of used EVs for the fleet industry and individual drivers alike.

The BVRLA highlights that the used vehicle market is four times the size of its new vehicle counterpart. If the transition to zero-emission vehicles is to be successful, all road users need access to cleaner, greener vehicles that meet their needs, are affordable to buy and affordable to run.

Lesley Slater, chief commercial officer at Athlon UK, said: “As the fleet sector accelerates toward electrification, used EVs are no longer a niche proposition.

“They’re a smart, sustainable choice when looking to reduce costs and carbon footprints without compromising on quality or reliability.”

Athlon UK’s latest article, Unlocking Value in the EV Lifecycle, explores how stabilising used prices, robust battery health and growing resale demand are transforming the appeal of approved used EVs.

2025 has seen a wave of ex-fleet EVs entering the used market, boosting supply. These three-year-old vehicles are transforming the quality and appeal of what is available. Unlike the early wave of first-generation EVs, which often struggled with limited range, charging cable compatibility, and outdated infotainment systems, newer returning vehicles are markedly more robust and technologically refined – making them a good fit for fleets as well as private drivers. Latest BVRLA figures show used EV leasing is surging.

“We’re seeing growing demand from businesses that want to trial EVs before committing to full electrification,” added Slater. “Used EVs provide that perfect stepping stone for fleets as well as retail consumers.”

A thriving used EV market does not just benefit today’s buyers – it strengthens the entire ecosystem.

“Robust demand for approved used EVs gives residual value setters greater confidence,” explained Mark Jowsey, head of asset risk at Athlon UK. “That translates into stronger RVs on new EVs, which in turn lowers leasing rates and improves affordability for fleet and business users.”

Slater finished: “We agree with the BVRLA’s position on the importance of making electric mobility accessible for all. Approved used EVs are a key part of that journey – and we’re proud to help the BVRLA lead the way.”
