Priced from £26,995, the Atto 2 DM-i takes the crown as the UK’s cheapest plug-in hybrid, making the technology “more attainable” to more buyers.

BYD also offers the fully electric Atto 2, launched in August 2025 as the brand’s smallest SUV and priced at £30,850, but the carmaker is rapidly expanding its plug-in hybrid line-up in the UK, moving beyond its initial focus on pure electric vehicles.

The new plug-in hybrid Atto 2 DM-i echoes the keen pricing of its fully electric sibling while mirroring Active and Boost grade levels.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain is available in two versions, both featuring a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine but with different battery and motor setups.

Active versions get a 7.8kWh battery – enough for 31 miles of driving in fully electric mode and a total range of 577 miles. This puts it in the 16% BiK bracket for 2026/7. Power stands at 165hp while peak torque is 300Nm and the 0-62mph figure is 9.1 seconds.

Boost versions uprate this with a 18kWh battery, which allows for up to 93 miles of driving in fully electric mode and a combined range of 621 miles. BiK for this version is 7% for 2026/7. Boost models also get an uplift in power to 212hp, cutting the 0-62mph sprint to 7.5 seconds while maintaining the same 300Nm maximum torque.

Weighted combined fuel consumption figures are 201.7mpg for the Active and 470.8mpg for the Boost.

As with BYD’s other DM-i models, the plug-in hybrid technology prioritises electric driving, acting primarily as an electric vehicle supported by a petrol engine. The engine serves chiefly as a generator for the electric side of the powertrain, only driving the wheels directly under heavy load.

Elsewhere, the Atto 2 DM-i echoes the styling of the fully electric version while offering boot space of 425/1,335 litres (seats up/down) compared to 400/1,340 for the Atto 2 EV.

Equipment includes Google Automotive Services as standard via a 12.8-inch touchscreen, with Maps, Assistant and Play Store all included, plus Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The Active trim features 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, taillights and daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, electrically adjustable and heated side mirrors, an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, fabric seat upholstery, four USB ports, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

Boost models come with 17-inch alloy wheels, aluminium roof rails, rear privacy glass and panoramic sunroof. Front parking sensors and electrically folding door mirrors are also included, along with a 360-degree camera and 50W wireless smartphone charging, plus a quicker 6.6kW onboard charger (up from the Active’s 3.3kW) and vehicle-to-load functionality. Cabin upgrades deliver vegan leather trim, along with heated steering wheel and front seats.

First deliveries of the Atto 2 DM-i start in August.
