Showcased just days after the carmaker announced its imminent arrival in the UK as a standalone brand alongside the Omoda and Jaecoo marques, its inaugural model took to the famed hill climb driven by a female-only team.

A rival to the Peugeot 5008, the seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV launches this summer and puts the focus on “striking design with smart technology and everyday practicality”.

Its PHEV powertrain is capable of 745 miles, including 56 EV-only miles, and offers self-charging and fast charging too.

The powertrain marries up a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors to give 204hp and 365Nm of torque.

The interior comes with a digital cockpit that features a full-width dual-screen layout with voice control, a Sony 12-speaker system, wireless smartphone integration, ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof. Standard-fit driver assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, cabin filtration system and lane centring.

The Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid will also come with a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first.

Chery’s debut at Goodwood echoes sibling brand Jaecoo’s appearance a year ago and signals the group’s next chapter.

Farrell Hsu, Chery UK country director, said: “Goodwood is one of the most prestigious stages in the automotive world – so there’s no better place to reveal Chery’s most versatile and refined hybrid SUV to a UK audience. The Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid is a perfect expression of what Chery stands for: smart technology, generous space and electrified efficiency without compromise. It’s designed to make people happy, knowing they’ve made the smart choice for their next SUV.”

Chery says its UK go-to-market strategy features UK-optimised models and combines traditional franchise dealerships – many of which already represent the Omoda and Jaecoo brands – with a strong emphasis on warranty and aftermarket care.

Alongside the Tiggo 8, the brand is also springboarding its UK launch with another SUV, believed to be the smaller Tiggo 7 five-seater SUV.

UK pricing and specifications for the Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid will be announced in the coming weeks, with first customer deliveries expected at the end of summer.
