Chinese car giant Chery is pushing swiftly ahead with plans to enter the UK car market by revealing prices and specifications for its first model.
The Tiggo 8 seven-seat SUV launches from 1 September in both pure petrol and plug-in hybrid form, priced from £28,545 and £33,545 respectively and with the choice of two grades.
The Peugeot 5008 and Škoda Kodiaq rival arrives just weeks after Chery announced its imminent arrival in the UK as a standalone brand alongside the Omoda and Jaecoo marques.
One of two new SUVs coming from Chery in the coming months alongside the Tiggo 7 five-seater, the Tiggo 8 has been optimised by Chery International’s European R&D centre for the UK’s “demanding” roads and is pitched as a smart, comfortable new choice in one of the UK’s most popular segments.
The pure petrol version features a 147hp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with 275 Nm of torque and able to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 9.8 seconds with a top speed of 118mph.
The Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid plug-in hybrid uses a similar powertrain to the Jaecoo 7 SVS, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric power. The result is total WLTP range of 745 miles, including 56 EV-only miles, a 0-62 mph time of 8.5 seconds, with a top speed of 112mph. Add in CO2 emissions of 31g/km and it slots into the 9% Benefit-in-Kind bracket for the current tax year.
The 18.4kWh lithium iron phosphate battery can be charged from 30-80% in 20 minutes or can self-charge on the go.
The Tiggo 8 also comes with a 5+2 seating arrangement and load space of up to 1,930 litres with the rear rows folded.
Two interior trims – Aspire and Summit – are on offer. The base Aspire grade comes with dual-zone air-conditioning, adaptive cruise control, eight-speaker Sony audio, parking sensors and a full synthetic leather interior
Summit throws in a panoramic sunroof, multi-colour ambient lighting, a hands-free automatic tailgate, plus an upgraded 12-speaker Sony audio system, heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel and puddle lamps.
Chery UK deputy country director Farrell Hsu said: “Chery’s launch pricing positions our seven-seat SUV as a true category standout – delivering the space, specification and smart technology of a far more expensive vehicle, with the reassurance of a comprehensive warranty and trusted global engineering.
“At this price point, few rivals come close. Here, a competitive price is matched with genuine value – a brand-new car, backed by the scale, experience and reliability of Chery International, one of the world’s most established automotive manufacturers.”
All Tiggo 8s will come with a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty and will be available through the brand’s UK-wide dealer network.
They’ll be followed quickly by the brand’s second UK model in the form of the smaller Tiggo 7 five-seat compact crossover, which will be available in pure petrol and plug-in hybrid versions, priced from £24,995 and £29,995.
Chery UK’s Farrell Hsu added: “Chery is here to stay – and our aim is to make it a household name in the UK. With a growing national dealer network and a line-up tailored for British drivers, the brand is setting a new benchmark for what customers can expect in quality, innovation and long-term ownership confidence.”
