Honda is bigging up the value for its pint-sized Super-N EV with a starting price of £18,995.
On sale from 22 June, the electric hatchback is designed as a spiritual successor to the discontinued Honda e and brings Japan’s famous ‘kei car’ spirit to British roads with compact dimensions and a focus on urban fun. Honda describes the model as combining everyday electric utility with an infectious sense of delight.
Based on the lightweight platform of the Honda N-Series kei-car – Japan’s best-selling model line – it measures just 3.6m in length. But despite its ultra-compact size, it provides enough space for four adults to sit in comfort thanks to a cleverly packaged interior that delivers space that’s similar to models in the class above, Honda says.
The Super-N also features the brand’s famed Honda ‘Magic Seats’ configuration, where they can be folded in multiple ways. As a result, the luggage area delivers maximum capacity of 162 litres with the rear seats up, or 967 litres with them down, which is one of the largest in the A-segment.
Honda’s compact e-Axle integrated EV powertrain delivers 64hp, rising to 95hp when Boost Mode is engaged. This unlocks a 0-62mph time of 10.0 seconds, vs. 14.51 seconds in ‘Normal Mode’.
As with the City Turbo II, the emphasis is on an engaging, responsive and accessible driving experience in all environments, from crowded city streets to the open road. Unlike traditional EV models, the Super-N is extremely light, which Honda says makes it feel more agile and engaging to drive, as with the City Turbo II. It also gets uprated suspension and a chassis tuned on British roads for enhanced dynamic performance.
Powered by a 29.6kW lithium-ion battery, the Super-N weighs just 1,097kg and delivers a WLTP combined’ range of 128 miles (WLTP). However, in urban driving environments, where the compact and nimble Super-N is likely to spend much of its time, the battery provides a ‘city’ range of 199 miles. It can be recharged to 80% using a 50kW DC supply in 30 minutes.
The Super-N also gets a simulated seven-speed transmission and Honda’s Active Sound Control system, which generates an “engaging” engine sound. Honda says the electric city car provides the instant response of an EV with the strong emotional connection of driving a combustion engine vehicle.
Its retro-cool exterior design features a similarly distinctive wide stance to the iconic City Turbo II, teamed up with large bumpers, flared arches and eye-catching aero ducts.
Exterior colours include the signature Boost Violet Pearl, said to be inspired by the electrical intensity of a bolt of lightning. In addition, there is a two-tone finish that includes a contrasting gloss black roof panel and rear spoiler, plus several distinctive body graphic option packs.
The interior packs in bolstered front seats for greater support and comfort, along with distinctive blue highlights that also pay homage to the original City Turbo II, plus ambient lighting that changes from cool blue light to a bold purple when Boost Mode is selected.
Just one trim is offered, which packs in standard equipment that includes wired and wireless smartphone mirroring, enabled by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus an eight-speaker Bose sound system with a 20cm subwoofer designed specifically to fit under the Super-N’s boot. The Super-N also gets a suite of Honda Sensing advanced driver aids offered as standard.
