Jeep has taken the wraps off its Recon electric 4×4, complete with 650hp of power.

Jeep’s third all-electric vehicle following the Avenger and Compass Electric, it’s also the first electric off-roader to be trail-rated, according to the brand, which means it’s passed a series of gruelling off-road tests across key performance categories.

Due on sale in the UK and across Europe late next year, the Recon is the unofficial electric equivalent of the Wrangler and delivers “Jeep rugged capability in a fully electrified form”.

Built on purpose-designed electric architecture, the Recon comes with a standard, all-electric, four-wheel drive, enhanced by the exclusive Selec-Terrain system with five drive modes tailored for all conditions.

The dual-motor setup delivers 650hp and 841Nm of torque, with a 0-60mph time from 3.7 seconds.

The 100kWh, 400V battery pack has an estimated range of up to 250 miles on the US EPA cycle and is protected by high-strength steel underbody shields.

The suspension on the Jeep Recon – a short-long arm (SLA) up front and integral link in the rear – is engineered to “respond precisely to driver inputs while maximising tyre contact for an optimal balance of on-road comfort and off-road capability”. Offroad specifications include 34-degree approach angle, 34.5-degree departure angle and 23.5-degree breakover angle.

The Selec-Terrain traction management system includes a Rock mode for the US-only Moab trim, along with Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand.

Additionally, the Recon is fitted with low-speed Selec-Speed Control for navigating challenging inclines and declines. When engaged, Selec-Speed Control maintains a set speed, allowing the driver to focus entirely on steering.

Off-road performance is further enhanced by an electronic locking differential, which ensures torque is delivered to both rear wheels when engaged. At the flip of a switch, the driver can transition open differential to fully locked.

The exterior “blends heritage-inspired design with modern electric innovation”. A dual-pane sunroof comes as standard or there’s an optional Sky One-Touch Power Top. Jeep also says the Recon is the only fully electric vehicle designed with removable doors, rear quarter glass and swing gate glass.

The interior features a “technologically advanced cabin” that features a 12.3-inch driver cluster as standard, paired with a 14.5-inch horizontal touchscreen centre display; the largest singular usable digital screen space ever offered in a Jeep vehicle. It also comes with “handcrafted materials, clever storage and customisable touches that embody the Jeep lifestyle”, including more than 170 standard safety and security features.

The Recon will begin production early next year, with initial launches in the US and Canada, followed by a global rollout in Q4.
