Emissions from commuting must be addressed for organisations to meet ambitious net zero targets.

According to Mobilityways, scope 3 commuting emissions account for 5% of the UK’s total emissions – 18 billion kg of CO2e annually – despite being often overlooked.

With many employers planning the return to the office, Mobilityways is running a free online conference dedicated to decarbonising the commute

Taking place on 9 December 2021, the ZC3 (Zero Carbon Commuting Conference) aims to help employers reduce their Scope 3 commuter emissions, supported by speakers from across industry, government and academia.

Matthew Fell, chief UK policy director at the CBI, said: “If the UK is to meet its obligations to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, decarbonisation of commuting will be vital. However, this will require not only significant public and private investment in infrastructure and technology, but also a shift in business and employee behaviours to match.”

ZC3 will be opened by the UK Minister for Science, Technology & Innovation, George Freeman. Other speakers include Jo Walker, group environment & sustainability manager at the Royal London, and Glenn Lyons, professor of future mobility at University of the West of England.

The conference is being hosted by Mobilityways. Run by car-sharing specialist Liftshare, the Mobilityways Platform provides a range of software tools to enable employers to decarbonise their commuter emissions.

Founder and CEO of Mobilityways, Ali Clabburn said: “Our commuting behaviour is a huge contributor to the climate crisis and employers must be accountable for reducing that impact. “If we fail to make Zero Carbon Commuting a reality, we will fail our net zero goals. And if we fail our net zero goals, our children will not forgive us.”
