Significantly larger than before and with more prominent coupé styling, the second-generation crossover from BMW – one of the event partners for April’s Great British Fleet Event – also raises the bar with more new technology, more power and the 283-mile WLTP range of the iX2.

The line-up kicks off with the lead-in X2 sDrive20i, priced from £40,515 and powered by a three-cylinder petrol unit with mild hybrid technology, delivering 170hp and peak torque of 280Nm. It sprints from 0 to 62 mph in 8.3 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is rated 44.8-48.7mpg with WLTP CO2 emissions at 131-143g/km.

The M35i xDrive, priced at £49,340, features a 300hp four-cylinder petrol using M TwinPower Turbo technology and generating peak power and torque of 300hp and 400Nm respectively. It sprints to 62mph in 5.4 seconds.

The two petrol engines are paired to a seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch and come with standard fit gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

In all-electric guise, it’s available in two variants: the entry-level eDrive20 that arrives later priced at £51,615 and the xDrive30 on sale now, priced at £57,445.

The new eDrive20 is powered by a 204hp electric motor at the front axle that enables a 0-62mph time in 8.6 seconds and a top speed limited to 106mph.

The all-wheel drive xDrive30 adds in an extra battery at the rear, generating a combined 313hp (including temporary boost) and 494Nm.

Both feature a 64.8kWh battery that enables a WLTP range of 272-283 miles for the eDrive20 and 259-267 miles for the xDrive30.

It’s able to charge at up to 11kW AC as standard, giving a 0-100% charge in 6.5 hours. Customers can also choose three-phase AC charging up to 22kW as an option, which reduces the charging time to 3 hours 45 minutes.

The iX2 can also charge at up to 130kW DC via a public rapid charger, giving a 10-80% ‘refuel’ in some 29 minutes.

Adaptive recuperation adjusts how much power is recuperated according to the respective traffic situation, or the driver can select high, medium or low braking energy recovery for all traffic situations via the iDrive menu.

The new electric variants support BMW’s work to have more than two million fully electric vehicles on the road by the end of 2025 while by 2030, it expects every second vehicle sold by the BMW Group worldwide will have an all-electric drive system.

Regardless of power type, M Sport specification comes as standard, featuring M-specific bodykit, 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch on the X2 M35i xDrive) and Adaptive M suspension, Sport steering and M Sport brakes. The interior also dials up the style with an M‑specific cockpit design, sport seats, Alcantara-covered instrument panel, anthracite-coloured headliner and M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles.

Latest technologies include the standard Curved Display, combining a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch control display, and the new BMW Operating System 9 and iDrive with QuickSelect, plus smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. A two-zone automatic climate control system is also standard, as is a rain sensor with automatic headlight activation.

The standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and an audio system with six speakers and amplifier output of 100 watts. The optional Harman Kardon Sound System raises the number of speakers to 12 and the amplifier output to 205 watts.

The new X2 also delivers a large spread of driver assistant systems enabling automated driving and parking.

Longer, taller and wider than its predecessor, the X2 can accommodate 560 litres of cargo seats-up, 90 litres more than its predecessor, rising to 1,470 litres seats down (+ 115 litres). The mild hybrid X2 sDrive20i has a boot capacity of 515 – 1,400 litres, while the fully electric BMW iX2 offers between 525 and 1,400 litres.

A trailer tow hitch can be ordered as an option, now operated electrically at the touch of a button. The maximum permitted trailer load is up to 1,800kg – or 1,200kg for the iX2.

Both petrol models and the fully electric iterations are produced on a single assembly line at BMW Group Plant Regensburg.

Deliveries of the new BMW X2 start from this month.
