Thousands more EV charge points are set to be rolled out in towns and cities across England to help drivers without off-street parking go electric.

Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood has confirmed that government and industry are expected to install over 100,000 local charge points in the coming years, joining the 80,000-plus public charge points already available in the UK.

The plans are supported by the existing cash from the £381m Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund for local authorities. The funding is part of the Government’s £4bn investment to support industry and consumers switch to EVs.

Alongside the government funding, the UK is expected to benefit from £6bn in private investment to install tens of thousands of charge points by 2030.

Greenwood said: “This government is powering up the EV revolution by rolling out a charge point every 29 minutes and our support to roll out over 100,000 local charge points in England shows we’re committed to making even more progress.

“We’re delivering our Plan for Change by investing over £4bn to support drivers make the switch, while backing British carmakers through international trade deals – creating jobs, boosting investment and securing our future.”

Greenwood confirmed the charging rollout as she visited Believ’s charge points in Exeter, following the company’s announcement last week of a £300m investment to roll out 30,000 charge points in the UK.

Suffolk County Council has become the first local authority in England to enter into a contract with a charge point operator to kickstart its charging rollout. It’s rolling out around 6,000 new public charge points across the county in partnership with Believ.

The Government has also cut red tape on workplace, public and private EV charge point installations, making it quicker and cheaper for fleets and drivers to go electric.
