Volvo has introduced a new long-range plug-in hybrid powertrain for its best-selling XC60 and XC90 SUVs, boosting electric-only driving range to levels traditionally reserved for fully electric vehicles.

The XC60 medium SUV leads the way with a “paradigm-shifting” electric range of up to 124 miles on a single charge, while the larger XC90 provides up to 99 miles.

Launched for the European and American markets, the new models offer more than two and a half times the driving distance of Volvo’s existing XC60 and XC90 PHEV models, which stand at 49 and 42 miles respectively.

The massive increase in range is the result of a new, larger-capacity, floor-integrated battery and a more powerful electric motor, while the petrol engine can take over when needed. Both cars also remain available as mild hybrids.

Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO at Volvo Cars, said the new long-range plug-in hybrids, together with the brand’s fully electric models, mean “a path to full electrification for every customer”.

Alongside the new powertrain, Volvo has also rolled out significant design and safety upgrades for the upgraded XC60. The reworked front and rear include a new grille, front bumper, bonnet, front wings and new wheels along with a redesign of the Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights.

The interior also gets an update with a new dashboard and door panel design, wood decor and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather, enhanced by top-of-the-line interior illumination.

Safety upgrades bring new advanced real-time collision responses. The vehicle can deploy automatic emergency steering and braking, and features a new cyclist alert system that warns occupants before opening a door into an approaching rider.

The XC60 also comes with a wide range of advanced driver support features such as lane change assist and a 360 camera with 3D view, enabled by upgraded sensing technology including radars, cameras and other sensors.

The new XC60 also gains Google Gemini, the next-generation AI assistant from Google. Integrated into the new Volvo Car UX infotainment system, which is accessed via the 11.2-inch infotainment screen, it puts key information and controls within easy reach, Gemini understands natural everyday language to take care of navigation, messages and music.

Volvo has also enhanced its XC90 seven-seater SUV, following recent technology and design updates. Changes include a new, optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system and the Google Gemini functionality.

As with all new Volvo cars, the new XC60 and XC90 support regular over-the-air (OTA) updates, gaining new features and improvements over time.

Order books for the new models, including the Black Edition, are open from today in selected markets, with production starting later this autumn. Prices for the UK will be announced in the coming weeks.
