Cupra has showcased its dramatic Tindaya concept at Munich and pledged that the show car will become reality.
Billed as a “revolution in the brand’s DNA”, it’s said to embody the brand’s future vision and design language.
The radical-looking SUV is named after a volcanic mountain in Fuerteventura where the copper-toned rock “echoes the signature of Cupra, while its raw form connects with the materials and textures of our design language”.
At 4.72m long, it’s the brand’s longest model yet and features large 23-inch wheels and high ground clearance, capturing “Cupra’s rebellious spirit, a core element of the brand’s design philosophy”.
It’s expected to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s forthcoming Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), a next-generation, all-electric vehicle platform designed to underpin a wide range of models across all of its brands as the successor to the MEP and PPE platforms.
Cupra has said it would be able to support either fully electric or range-extender EV powertrains. The latter uses two electric motors to deliver 496hp, fed by a battery with around 190 miles (300km) of range or 620 miles (1,000km) when topped up by the 1.5-litre petrol engine.
“The Cupra Tindaya Showcar is not a dream, not even an ambition. This is our Cupra statement, and it’s going to be a reality,” said Markus Haupt, interim CEO.
The concept also centres around the ‘No Drivers, No Cupra’ premise, featuring a fully driver-centric architecture, inspired by motorsport and cutting-edge technology to ensure the driver experience remains core.
“While many move away from the driver, we double down on what matters most – the connection behind the wheel. Our focus will always be on the emotion of driving,” Haupt added.
At the heart of the design lies the ‘Driver Axis’ – a sculpted dashboard built in layered structural forms framing a 24-inch freeform display. The racing- and gaming- inspired steering wheel features satellite buttons for total control with zero distraction, while the elevated centre console serves as the backbone of a fully integrated, tactile and functional mono cockpit.
Cupra also used the Munich motor show to display the Raval hatchback in camouflaged form. Due next year, it’s the sibling to the Volkswagen ID. Polo, ID. Cross crossover and Škoda Epiq also showcased at Munich amid the group’s plans for affordable EVs to democratise EV ownership.
