Extra MSA has revealed plans to increase its number of EV charging facilities almost fourfold before the end of 2026.

The motorway service operator will grow from its current 60 ultra-rapid 350kW charge points to a total of 234 across its eight sites in England thanks to its continued collaboration with EV rapid charging specialist Ionity.

To meet its 2026 target, Extra has further plans to significantly increase its EV facilities across its Leeds Skelton Lake Services (M1 J45), Blackburn Services (M65 J4) and Baldock Services (A1(M) J10) sites by the end of the year.

These will join the firm’s newly expanded EV capabilities at Cambridge Services (A14(M11), J24), Cobham Services (M25 J9/10) and Peterborough Services (A1(M) J17 & A605); each site now boasts 24 chargers.

Extra MSA said the latest expansion highlights its commitment to strengthening the sustainable charging network for UK road users and addressing the rising demand for electric vehicles.

The firm was already the first motorway services provider to surpass the Government’s targets of installing at least six chargers at each of its service areas.

It also has a partnership with green energy provider Octopus that means all energy powering its ultra-rapid chargers is 100% renewable.

As well as supporting the EV transition through partnerships with charging networks, Extra MSA is also committing to educating the next generation on the career opportunities that EV charging can present. It recently held an EV insights day at Leeds Skelton Lake Services in collaboration with social value specialist Ahead Partnership to engage Year 10 students in the conversation around sustainable transportation.
